Learn all about it: Friday, March 14 at 6:00pm, Gill Dawg, 5419 Treadway Blvd. Port Richey
Dragon boating is coming to Pasco County! Jump into fun and get on a team! With the announcement of Port Richey’s Dragon Boat Festival we are in the process of developing a Port Richey Dragon Boat Club. We are currently looking for individuals that would be interested in helping us set up this local club. Those interested to learn more are invited to attend an informational session being held at Gill Dawg, 5419 Treadway Blvd. Port Richey, Florida 34668 on Friday, March 14 at 6:00pm. At this initial meeting it will be an open meeting on what we will need to do in establishing the Port Richey Dragon Boat Club.
As part of the development of the club, we will be holding Introduction to Dragon Boat every second Friday, beginning March 14th. These informational classes are designed for those who may be interested in the sport of dragon boating but do not know where to start. It will include basic information such as the history of dragon boating, dragon boat safety, how to hold the paddle and a breakdown of the dragon boat stroke.
Dragon Boat Racing is a sport that anyone can do. Come join us at 6:00 pm on the second Friday of every month and try out dragon boating. Try for yourself in our state-of-the-art dragon boats with our experienced coaches! We’ll provide the boat, paddle and all of the other necessary gear to get started in this fast paced sport.
Teams are formed with 18-25 people from all walks of life. Any age, size, ability and gender can learn to paddle on a dragon boat team. 20 paddlers are seated in 10 rows of 2 with a drummer sitting in the bow, facing the paddlers. The paddler’s job is to paddle in unison with the entire team. The drummer’s job is to beat the drum in sync with the paddlers and to motivate their team to the finish line. A steersperson stands in the stern of the boat, guiding the boat straight down the race course with a 10-foot oar.
